Press freedom under threat
Why?
The spread of fake news and disinformation is becoming a danger to the freedom of press and democracy itself in the age of Internet.
They entice citizens to have lower trust in organizations, politicians, and in media – while trust is essential to representative democracy. It also creates through the use of fake news wrong information misconceptions about life in the community and society.
In countries like Albania where media still suffers from lack of editorial freedom and strong censorship the consequences are even greater.
What?
The project "Press Freedom under Threat" of the Institute for Democracy, Media and Culture (IDMC) with the support of Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) purports to encourage young people to think critically about the information they consume and create.
Considering that the techniques of Media Literacy are not applied in the Albanian school curricula, this project aims to improve competencies of high school students to distinguish fake news, or facts from opinions, and to understand how media can sometimes be used to persuade people.
Democracy depends on people's ability to make informed decisions while casting their vote, about the marketplace, and in all aspects of their personal and professional lives.
How?
Some 160 young people from various high schools and students of journalism will explore the challenges of good reporting and discuss the difficulties for good journalism which is threatened by disinformation.
