Forum "Decommunization from young people's perspective"

IDMC organized the open online discussion "Decommunization from Young People's Perspective".
The discussion took place between the historian Artan Hoxha, the executive director of IDMC, Dr. Jonila Godole and young transitional justice scholars Ines Stasa and Romina Kali. Part of this meeting as participants were young students and professionals of law, journalism, political science and history.
During the activity were discussed the terminology used, the needs of the youth to recognize Communism, the policies of memory and whether there have been successful initiatives in Albania.
The head of IDMC, Dr. Godole mentioned some of the memory policies that should be undertaken in Albania, such as:
- raising public awareness through the mass media about anti-communist resistance and re-evaluating political figures, museumizing the places of suffering;
- changing the history curriculum, giving due importance to the study of the dictatorship period in many aspects;
- full indexation of the number of victims, etc.
Regarding museumization, it was discussed that in Albania, the measures taken are concentrated only in an Albanian city like Shkodra, at a time when the erection of memorials throughout the country would serve as a deeper reflection of the whole Albanian for what happened during the communist period regardless of the province and religion because the past with all its consequences belongs to us and has affected us all.
