You keep your copyright

By submitting a film to Roots & Reels, you and your group remain the copyright holders of your work.

You are free to:

  • show your film elsewhere,
  • submit it to other festivals or competitions,
  • publish it on your own channels,
  • enter into further agreements with other partners.

Licence granted to IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung

By submitting your film and accepting these conditions, you grant IDMC – Institute for Democracy, Media & Culture, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to:

  • host your film on websites and channels directly related to Roots & Reels, IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung;
  • screen your film in non-commercial educational, cultural and commemorative contexts (e.g. workshops, youth meetings, conferences, summits, exhibitions, festivals) connected to Roots & Reels, IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung;
  • share your film, or parts of it, on social media channels connected to IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung (for example Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and similar platforms);
  • use short clips, still images, the film title and your short bio in communication and documentation about the Competition, IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung (for example in posts, trailers, highlight videos, online galleries, printed or digital reports).

This licence is granted for an unlimited period in connection with the non-commercial educational and public-interest mission of IDMC, the EUSTORY network and Körber-Stiftung. You remain free to use and licence your film in any other context.

Non-commercial character

The licence is non-exclusive and non-commercial:

  • IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung will not sell your film or use it as a standalone commercial product.
  • If in the future a partner wishes to use your film in a clearly commercial context, this would require a separate agreement with you.

Some events where your film is shown may charge participation or registration fees (for example conferences or festivals). This does not change the non-commercial character of the licence granted for your film itself.

Credits and attribution

Whenever reasonably possible, IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung will:

  • display your name or alias (and group name, if relevant),
  • mention your country, and
  • use your film title

in connection with the showing of your film.

If a film is used in contexts where individual credits cannot be shown for technical reasons (e.g. very short trailers or social snippets), IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung will aim to include credits in accompanying material (e.g. description text, programme notes, website).

Images, names and voices

By entering the Competition, you also agree that:

  • your name or your alias,
  • your image and/or voice (as they appear in the film or in recordings of events), and
  • your short bio.

may be used in communication and documentation about Roots & Reels, IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung, for example:

  • on websites,
  • on social media channels,
  • in printed or digital publications, reports and event materials.

This will always be done in line with the Data Protection & Privacy Notice.

If you later wish to limit or revoke use

If, for important personal reasons, you would like us to stop showcasing your film online (for example, remove it from a website or channel), you can contact:

rootsandreels@idmc.al (with reference to “Roots & Reels – film removal request”).

IDMC will consider your request and, where possible and reasonable, remove your film from its own channels and coordinate with EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung regarding their channels. However:

  • past uses that already took place under this agreement remain lawful,
  • IDMC, EUSTORY and Körber-Stiftung cannot fully control copies, downloads or shares that third parties may have made while the film was publicly accessible.
