Postcards from the Past

Slightly different from similar historical-informative exhibitions, the project "Postcards from the Past" is a creative work inspired and created to satirize and reflect on Albania's dictatorial past.

The posters in the exhibition aim to bring to the audience's attention in an attractive way the absurd phenomena of the time.

It came as a reflection on a long period of research, placing at the center historical events and social phenomena that occurred during the 50 years of Albania's isolation.

The content is displayed in such a way as to attempt to point out sensitive topics such as: State Security, cooperation with international actors, hunger crisis, the cult of the individual, censorship, isolation, education, propaganda, manipulation of the masses etc.

All images are accompanied by a sarcastic label in English and in Albanian, and ready for digital consumption!

Impressum

The making of this exhibition was supported by the Institute for Democracy, Media & Culture (IDMC), which strives to raise awareness of the younger generation and Albanian society about the country's dictatorial regime and its consequences.

The State's Central Archive has served as the main source for the posters in the exhibition, including propaganda magazines from the 1970s–1980s, and other textbooks.

Authorship

The posters in this exhibition were prepared by Valbona Bezati (journalist and PR lecturer at the University of Richmond in London) and Erblin Vukaj (journalist and researcher).

The editor is Dr. Jonila Godole, executive director of IDMC and professor at the University of Tirana, as well as a researcher on Albania's dictatorship period.
