New man in films under dictatorship (1958–1990) II

The second meeting, organized by IDMC as a part of the workshop "New Man in Films under Dictatorship (1958–1990)" focused on the topic of "the other as enemy." In order to approach this aspect the following movies produced during the dictatorship at the beginning of 1970s were discussed: "I teti në bronx" (1970), "Operacioni Zjarri" (1973), "Prefekti" (1976), "Fijet që priten" (1976).
All of the participants showed a great interest in discussing in particular the movie "Prefekti". According to them, the language used denigrated the real figures from which the comedy had taken its inspiration. Professor Linda Mëniku said that during this period cinematography had aimed to build divisions within the population, showing "the enemy element of the socialist revolution". She added that movies, such as "Operacioni Zjarri" or "I teti në bronx" highlighted the contributions of individuals serving the Party and, on the other hand, condemned by being discredited those who were considered as the enemy.
The participants also shared the opinion that movie propaganda made possible "the division of society", providing concrete examples where the place of "the enemy" was. In this way, through propaganda the so-called "class struggle" and/or "revolutionary vigilance" was possible.
In the next meeting on 4 May 2018, the following movies will be discussed: "Kur po xhirohej një film" (1981), "Treni niset në shtatë pa pesë" (1988), "Nxënësit e klasës sime" (1984) dhe "Cuca e maleve" (1972). We will analyze the role of the woman in these movies.
