"Children of the Dictatorship" screening in Shkodra

"Children of the Dictatorship" documentary was screened in Shkodra, at Arka Youth Centre by the Institute for Democracy, Media & Culture (IDMC) in collaboration with Cultural Heritage without Borders in Albania (CHwB). The documentary is done by IDMC in 2016 in collaboration with the University of Arts.
The activity was opened by CHwB representative Jonathan Eaton, who emphasised the importance of dealing with the past in Albania. The documentary was presented by IDMC Project Coordinator, Matilda Karçanaj, who stressed the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to raise awareness of young people about the consequences of the crimes of the dictatorship. Karçanaj said that the challenge in the work of IDMC is the poor interest of young people to know more about the dictatorship; therefore IDMC finds alternative ways to raise their awareness, such as the "Children of the Dictatorship" documentary, which conveys facts and messages unread before.
"Through the testimonies of contemporary witnesses of that time, Alma Liço, Simon Mirakaj, Ritvana Mena and Lurian Mena, brought as protagonists of this documentary, IDMC aims to raise awareness of Albanian society for the consequences of the crimes of dictatorship."
After the documentary screening the young people had the opportunity to discuss with Ritvana Mena, character of the documentary, who shared with them the experience of filming. Present in this activity was also Viktor Martini, former political prisoner in the prison of Burrel, who transmitted the message of treating each other equally regardless of whether their parents were or not supporters of the dictatorship system. In his call for young people, he said:
"I urge young people to learn about the dictatorship crimes but not to make the differentiation 'us' and 'them/the others', differentiation form which we have suffered."
During the discussion, Valbona Bezati, coordinator of IDMC project "Unë dëshmoj" shared with the participants her experience during the conversations with the contemporary witnesses of the dictatorship.
IDMC thanks Cultural Heritage without Borders in Albania for their interest shown for the screening of the documentary "Children off the Dictatorship" in Shkodra.
